ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the author's experience with high school students in a course centered in critical race theory (CRT). It attempts to engage with ideas from CRT that resonated deeply with his own perspectives. These ideas included the view that racism is endemic to daily life in the United States and the assertion that there is a unique voice of those who have been marginalized in relationship to the status quo. The commitment to social justice through CRT calls for those concerned with making substantive change in our communities to develop processes and strategies with those who are currently engaged in the work. The chapter provides a context for the issues and concerns of students and to equip them with the analytical tools and vocabulary to critique the status quo. It explains about media conglomerates, which shows how a small number of media corporations control the full range of mass media, from television to feature films to radio programming.
