ABSTRACT

China is the world’s most populous country, with currently one out of five people in the world living within its borders. For this reason alone, the future of China’s population is closely linked to the future of the world population. However, China’s population trends are also remarkable for at least three major structural changescalled “revolutions” by the Chinese-that have been happening at a speed unsur passed in any other country, despite the sheer size of the population involved:

• A very rapid fertility decline to below replacement level. • Massive rural-urban migration. • Significant improvements in educational enrolment.
