ABSTRACT

The next seven articles examine Islam in particular, discussing modem Islamic movements in the light of Islamic principles of justice and governance. The first of this set, my article on ‘Islam, Justice, and Polities’, appeared in Islam and Justice, a volume of essays published by the Institute of Islamic Understanding in Kuala lumpur in 1993. I argue that the ubiquitous commandments in the Quran to act in accordance with justice create a positive obligation on Muslims to stand for social reform and the creation of just societies.
