ABSTRACT
Freud's days shortly after his return from Paris seem to have been filled with scientific controversy. He cut loose from the teachings of the Viennese School. A great impression was made upon him by the failure of the hopes which Erb had held out in his famous treatise on Electrotherapeutics. For a long time, Freud kept up communications with Paris, since this gave him a firm ground to stand upon. He translated some of Charcot's lectures, and subsequently a work by Bernheim.
