ABSTRACT

William Tecumseh Sherman,1820–1891, was one of the Union’s most tenacious generals during the Civil War. Charles R. Sherman, his biological father, died when Tecumseh was nine. Tecumseh Sherman never fully accepted or recovered from his father’s death, which left his family destitute. Afterward, Sherman became an adhered child when his mother sent him to live with Thomas and Maria Ewing, who became his foster parents. 1 Sherman later married Ellen Ewing, his foster sister, thus cementing his relationship to his foster father who now also became his father-in-law. This fact seriously affected Sherman’s life-long dilemma of being severely influenced by his three fathers.
