ABSTRACT

Group work is the norm in anger management and domestic violence offender treatment. Its main advantages over other modalities are that group work gives clients the opportunity to share their stories, learn positive behaviors and attitudes from their peers (although they may also learn negative behaviors and attitudes), and give each other mutual support. A practical advantage is cost efficiency, a very important consideration in this era of diminishing funding. Also, in the realm of domestic violence treatment same-sex group treatment has been considered the only appropriate modality and couples counseling has been specifically disallowed (to be discussed later in this chapter).
