ABSTRACT

Under the leadership of Hilda Borko, Jennifer Jacobs, & Karen Koellner, a research team at the University of Colorado developed the Problem-Solving Cycle (PSC) model of professional development and the Math Leader Preparation (MLP) model for preparing and supporting PD leaders. These models are intended to address the growing demand both for high-quality professional development models that are scalable and sustainable and for the preparation and support of effective PD leaders. Digital video artifacts of practice play a central role in both models and are integral to the development of teachers’ understanding of student thinking and their instructional practices. This chapter highlights the role of video in the PSC and MLP. We explore the use of video as a tool for promoting conceptually rich discussions of content and pedagogy among teachers and their PD leaders and the facilitation practices that support these discussions.
