ABSTRACT

Movements of Islamic revival and reform are an important part of Islamic history. Scholars approach the study of these movements in different ways, and sometimes debates develop concerning distinctive interpretations of the processes of Islamic renewal. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, such debates are important in policy analysis, as extremist Muslim movements capture headlines. Fierce debates rage over effective responses to terrorist groups claiming to be part of an Islamic resurgence. Unfortunately, much less attention is given to Muslim movements of renewal and reform that are not associated with violence.
