ABSTRACT
145Since the 1970s, tensions between lesbians and bisexual women over issues of space and community have been common. One of the most widely reported and contentious of these debates began in 1989 in Northampton, Massachusetts, over the inclusion of “bisexual” in the town’s Lesbian and Gay Pride March and Rally. Placing the incident within the context of larger changes in lesbian and bisexual communities, this paper draws on interviews with participants in the debate and examines why this issue prompted such controversy.
