ABSTRACT

My analytical media work began similarly to that on golf. My first newspaper piece was on the Indian elections held after the ‘Emergency’ declared by Indira Gandhi around the time I first went there, then I wrote later for cricket magazines. When I joined Curtin, the University was opening a community radio station and that provided good opportunity to talk to more people. It was fascinating learning to communicate with different audiences in different ways, and the work set me up for transition into the media course in Canberra. At Curtin I did programmes on current affairs and politics, Asian studies, ran a series on the social history of music, and did a lot on sport.
