ABSTRACT

Professor J.A. Mangan’s ability to inspire confidence is an object lesson to any scholar who aspires to study critically issues and themes myopically considered unimportant until in the recent past. The concentration, insight and passion which he has demonstrated in leading his discipine for decades are qualities that I greatly admire. Indeed, had it not been for our interaction at St John’s College, Oxford, which I still cherish, I would never have written on sport. I am delighted to contribute this chapter to his Festschrift.
