ABSTRACT

To adapt a comment on Gary Sobers: Professor J.A. Mangan must be half a dozen scholars all rolled into one. To achieve what he has achieved, he must have had both the nerve of a gambler, the acumen of a financier, the skill of a psychologist, the critical precision of a surgeon, the patience of a saint and ten years’ more knowledge than an ordinary scholar can ever possess. This is our tribute to the ‘pioneer’ – the man who shaped modern sports studies.
