ABSTRACT

When Chinese government and military officials refer to ‘resource security’ they are talking beyond oil. This is because China’s resource needs include natural gas, crude oil, petroleum, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, rare earths, aluminum, textiles, iron ore, copper, zinc, bauxite, gold, silver, platinum, rubber, timber, coal, nickel, cardboard, soybeans, fertilizers, logs, paper pulp, and plastics, etc. However, in this chapter the word ‘resources’ refers to raw materials, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and artificial and natural resources.
