ABSTRACT

Exporting is a cost-efficient way to enter a foreign country. Most foreign companies export to Korea. This chapter gives an overview of different dimensions of exporting to Korea. We first outline and classify different types of exports, distinguishing between direct and indirect exporting. Then, we provide an overview of opportunities and challenges for foreign firms interested in exporting in Korea. Widespread adoption of e-commerce, overseas direct purchases, shifts in consumer behaviors and numerous FTA present attractive opportunities for foreign exporters. On the other hand, flexible contracts, hierarchical relationships in buyer–supplier relationships and tightly controlled distribution channels by chaebols pose challenges for foreign companies. Based on this understanding and several company examples, we provide specific recommendations for how foreign companies can export to Korea.
