ABSTRACT

This chapter presents clear pathways to build, refine, and/or restructure classroom management techniques. It addresses effective classroom management procedures for teaching art. Managing visual arts instruction is unique in that it involves teachers facilitating students’ responsible usage of specialized art. Teachers with proficient classroom management skills predetermine class guidelines, rules, and consequences to suit students’ needs, learning environments, and their personal teaching styles. Teachers need to anticipate how students will achieve learning outcomes and identify possible barriers that might hinder progress. Teachers should reinforce the classroom management plan’s mission and anticipated behaviors by teaching students positive actions that promote good citizenship. The choice-based art curriculum offers effective practices that engage students in the comprehensive study of art. Classroom spaces impact students’ physical and psychological safety, ability to focus, and participation in learning activities. Teachers save time and teach students independence by planning the storage and distribution of art supplies.
