Shine a Light
Too many journalists cover the news from the perspective of powerful institutions and individuals. The best journalists know they also have a responsibility to give voice to people in their communities who lack influence or power. In Chapter 11, young journalists will learn they must tell the stories of ordinary citizens if they are to properly reflect society in all its diversity, including race, social and economic status, ethnicity, political beliefs and religion and faith. They also will learn that, if journalists don’t shine a light on deplorable conditions and situations that need to be corrected, no one will.
