ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the contemporary challenges to the concept of public space, particularly when it is conceived as integral to the notion of the urban commons, and presents the challenges of enclosure, encroachment, and the exclusion of the common (the public) in urban transformations in a global economy. The arguments presented here draw from comparative examples and conclude by suggesting possible imperatives for urban design.
