ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the domains “Student” and “Home” and introduces a selection of factors to decipher the core messages for these domains. It also looks at both domains together, because both lead to the same core message: both the domain “Student” and the domain “Home” generate influences that have enormous impact on student achievement. The chapter examines two domains discussed in Visible Learning. First, the domain “Student”, in which factors such as “self-reported grades”, “ADHD”, “Piagetian programs”, “motivation”, and “gender” are included. Second, the domain “Home”, in which factors such as “socioeconomic status”, “welfare policies”, and “television” are included. The domain “Student” includes all those factors that take into account the physical, mental, and spiritual prerequisites of learners. Learners with high self-efficacy beliefs have better chances than those with low self-efficacy beliefs of being successful in the long term, because they seek out challenges, put in effort, and are enthusiastic about learning.
