ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to offer communication techniques and tips when working with others. The target audience is anyone who wants to learn and play a role in trying to help change the status quo. The first section establishes what we can do to improve our social relationships and what we should avoid when interacting with others. The second part outlines who we are with regards to our social identities or social standing. Race/ethnic identity, social class, age, occupation, ability, sex/gender, sexuality, and political and/or religious affiliation provide us with a level of power based on whether we hold privileged or inferior oppressed positions. Power and privilege versus oppression and subjugation are at the heart of social injustice. Managing ourselves and the language we use makes up the third section of this chapter. The ability to convey a message, both verbally and nonverbally, determines if others are put at ease or not, or if a situation is inflamed or calm. Gender-inclusive language, people-first language, and cross-cultural language tips and barriers are offered. The fourth and final section of this chapter outlines what individuals can do to make a difference in our quest for social justice.
