ABSTRACT

This chapter offers recommendations for working with experts that fall into one of the 10 categories. These include the speedy subject matter experts (SME), creative and scattered SME, shortcut SME, defensive SME, not-quite-expert SME, overcommitted SME, confounding SME, interrupted SME, reckless reviewer SME and reluctant SME. The Shortcut SME has worked in their area of expertise for so long that he or she uses shortcuts a novice could never follow. The Overcommitted SME consistently misses or is late for appointments or is overloaded with regular work responsibilities. A Dedicated SME is an expert hired by a firm to either supplement existing resources or to acquire expertise that is unavailable or in short supply for the sole purpose of content creation. A Dedicated SME can be very helpful to freestanding independent training consulting firms whose core expertise is performance and organizational development.
