Long-term strategic planning requires critical thinking as a type of expertise all its own, one that project managers can teach and grow quickly within their organization. One of the greatest values that a true critical thinker can bring to the organization is the ability to look without fear or favor at all parts of their business. Business consultants who assist companies in business planning usually include an exercise that asks executives and owners to reach deep down into their mission and vision statements to unearth the business they are really in. However, it bears repeating that long-term strategic planning goes hand in hand with their knowledge management planning efforts.
