ABSTRACT

Due to the deteriorating state of the analog radio communications equipment and costs incurred by the infrastructure manager to further their maintenance and modernization, it is necessary to implement the GSM-R on key railway lines in Poland as soon as possible, including HSL. The pace of the implementation of the GSM-R to a large extent is dependent on obtaining administrative decisions including decisions on environmental conditions (if required) and building permissions.

One of the key issues in the implementation of the GSM-R is the problem of radio network planning, taking into account both the requirements concerning the coverage of radio signal system ETCS level two on defined lines, but also dimensioning in terms capacity of telecommunications traffic for voice communications and other services offered in the GSM -R system. In this part of the monograph will be presented some problems for the radio network planning system railway mobile digital GSM-R including the Polish conditions. Description is given of the system architecture, a set of services available and how to implement data transmission. Then are determined the certain conditions that should be taken into account for the budget of the link and calculations of the useful range of each base station. There are also analysed the basic parameters of the radio transmission network dimensioning rules laid down for the purpose of determining the capacity of telecommunications traffic. This chapter includes also a classification of the main sources of traffic resulting from the applications of the GSM-R network for Polish railways. The volume generated within the base station telecom traffic affects not only the number needed to handle the movement of resources, but also implies the number needed to allocate frequency channels. In the final part there will be presented some problems related to the impact assessment of the planned network of the GSM-R on the environment with particular emphasis on construction of radio communication (OR) of the system.

The implementation of the GSM-R in Poland will improve the attractiveness of Polish railway network. Thanks to this investment on the lines within the trans-European transport corridors extending through Polish territory the European standards will be obtained.
