ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various methodological approaches used to study social representations. It covers methods for gathering data and methods for analyzing these data. The classic steps involved in these types of studies are described. First, the different solutions for determining the content of representations are discussed. Some of these methods are common to human sciences, like interviews, questionnaires, or observations, and some are more specific to social representations field, like hierarchical evocations. Methods to analyze these data and some specific protocols linked to theoretical approaches are then presented. This presentation aims to show the variability of possibilities offers in this field. It is also an invitation to cross theoretical orientations and/or methodologies in triangulated empirical designs.
