ABSTRACT

In this chapter cross-cultural research is introduced and related to disability, hearing loss, and social representations. Studies are presented to illustrate the different topics. The chapter contains both theoretical and methodological aspects of cross-cultural research. Important qualities related to cross-cultural research, such as language, translation, and ethics are also discussed. We argue that there are overlapping areas of interest between cross-cultural researchers and researchers using the Social Representations Theory, and that the use of the Social Representations Theory is a fruitful approach when it comes to studying how different cultures perceive and think about health conditions and disabilities, not least, hearing loss.
