Introduction

German education traces its origins, as do the schools throughout Europe, to the monastic or church schools of the Middle Ages. These schools were not general in any meaningful sense, but were intended to provide those given the priesthood with the tools to carry out their duties, especially to read and interpret the scriptures. The oldest specific type of institution that has maintained continuous existence since the Middle Ages is the university.
