ABSTRACT

The foundation for education in the German Democratic Republic rested on the ideology of Marx and Engels. The aim of socialist education system was a high educational level of all people, meaning universally educated and highly qualified citizens who are mentally and physically healthy, efficient, cultured and able and ready to fulfill the historic tasks of the time. While the formal management structure of education in the German Democratic Republic is difficult to frame, the informal power structure was clear and simple. Each school was headed by a School Director, who was formally responsible for the administration of the school. The so-called comrades made certain that instruction and other educational activities of the school maintained a high level of political and value content consistent with socialism. The purpose of these groups was to develop strong relationship between home and school and to draw parents into the general educational process, particularly to support the educational processes taking place in the school.
