ABSTRACT

The lycees are expected to make their pupils work so that the nation may be provided with its future middle and top management as well as its future leaders. The major changes to the college undertaken by the Minister of Education Christian Fouchet in the early and mid-sixties heralded changes in the lycees of the period. This was the time when the literary baccalaureat was still the most prestigious and Latin or Greek was necessary before being admitted to it. As an examination the baccalaureat has also attracted frequent criticism for the way it disrupts the final term. The lycees d'enseignement professionnel is exclusively concerned with the vocational training of teenagers. The studies leading to either a Certificat d'education professionnelle or a brevet d'enseignement professionnel are, like those for the vocational baccalaureat, a mixture of strictly vocational courses and a general education consisting of some easily recognised subjects such as French and history.
