Education in the British Virgin Islands: Case Study of a Caribbean Micro State

This chapter traces the development of education in the West Indian territory of the British Virgin Islands, and highlights significant characteristics and patterns of provision. Consequently the development of educational provision in the territory up to this date may be taken as being synonymous with the development of elementary or primary education. In 1954, the primary schools in the territory are classified as: Methodist management – ten schools; Anglican management – one school; Seventh Day Adventist management – one school; government owned – one school; private – three schools. The history of secondary educational provision in the British Virgin Islands is treated as comprising two distinct periods: 1943–1968, the era of the British Virgin Islands Secondary School; and 1968 to the present, the period of existence of the British Virgin Islands High School.
