ABSTRACT

The present situation of Central American adult education and education in general can be understood within a framework of historical and social evolution. The Central American republics share a common pattern of historical development which makes possible a common analysis. Between 1945 and 1950, 98,000 adults were made literate. Cultural Missions were established and Peripatetic Units for a post-literacy programme were developed. Perhaps the central feature in the process of development observed in this area since the 1950s is the collective attempt of Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala to establish basic norms for economic, military, and cultural integration. The structural dependence in Honduras, leads to a situation in which the US Embassy in Tegucigalpa becomes one of the major participants in the domestic political process.
