ABSTRACT

The Federal District is bordered by the State of Mexico on all sides except the south. The rapid growth of the urban area now means that roughly half the city lies outside the Federal District in the State of Mexico. The general description of the city illustrates the extreme difficulty which providing any service to the inhabitants of Mexico City presents. In the case of education this applies even more than to other services, as Mexico shares with much of Latin America a demography which means that more than 50 per cent of the population are below fourteen years of age. Religious education is prohibited in all schools, and the state is the main provider of higher education. The main objective of teachers and educational administrators in Mexico City is to provide an education which is relevant to the everyday circumstances of the pupils.
