ABSTRACT

Addressing sexual performance alone is not enough to help our clients with their issues regarding desire and intimacy. The introduction affirms that the concepts and practices in this book expand the field of sex therapy beyond frequencies of intercourse, orgasm, and other activities that can be counted and measured. The 4-D approach to exploring desire and intimacy looks beyond behavioral treatments and pharmaceutical interventions to invite therapists and their clients to explore sexual health rather than focus only on what is wrong. It offers dynamic language to open discussion with clients, and suggests multiple ways to engage clients in their own process of growth so practitioners do not find themselves working harder than their clients. The concept of Neuro Updates is introduced as a way to provide a vital evidence-based component to this clinical exploration of desire and intimacy, and to suggest how practitioners might begin to recognize and explain the neurological dimensions of human consciousness that are activated by the 4-D approach.
