ABSTRACT

The dialogue should take place in the context of a well-defined framework and a safe environment. This chapter presents research on common factors and their consequences for the way the dialogue that is conducted. The dialogue guide’s way of being in the conversation makes an important contribution to the outcome. This includes the dialogue guide’s own well-being, authenticity, empathy and acceptance of the dialogue partner’s situation. The chapter discusses the main ingredients and ways of being that are necessary for the art of dialogue. Any transformative and fruitful dialogue is based on a change rationale, where the dialogue guide has faith in the positive effect of the dialogue. Dialogue can be a highly complex practice that is more of an art than a skill. Reflection-in-action should be understood as part of the dialogue. Reflection-in-action is a shared project for both parties in the dialogue relationship — a reflection-in-interaction.
