ABSTRACT

The second chapter lays out the theoretical and conceptual framework of the research. In particular it addresses the relation between cultural memory and political legitimacy and develops a dynamic societal model of memory politics departing from the concepts of cultural memory (A. Assmann and J. Assmann) and remediation (Erll & Rigney). The chapter introduces the concepts of ‘memory chain’ and ‘memory cluster’ to describe the development of memory politics in contemporary Russia. Finally, the chapter reflects on the role of the Russian state in cinema and television production and the extent to which (self-)censorship is practised.
