ABSTRACT

The group psychotherapist who wishes to establish an online presence needs to take steps to ensure appropriate practice. This chapter illuminates the particular ethical and legal issues that impact practicing group psychotherapy online and provides specific recommendations for practice. The author examines issues related to assessing appropriateness of the use of online group psychotherapy, privacy and confidentiality, boundary issues specific to online practice, informed consent, legal concerns and insurance coverage. The chapter clarifies that when these subjects are given the appropriate consideration, the practice of online group psychotherapy can be successful and rewarding and ethical.
