ABSTRACT

The FLSD was originally developed as a way to meet, join, and assess families. The activity combines the initial intake information along with a process that joins and engages the whole family in treatment all at the same time. The expressive interactive process of the FLSD allows each member of a family to symbolically represent information that shares direct information about themselves but also potential unconscious information about the family system and each person’s operation within that system. The combined result of the FLSD provides a visual image that helps to engage families in the process of family counseling. This chapter illustrates the use of the FLSD with two different families. One family is a blended family and one family is seeking help for a family member.
