ABSTRACT

The process of the FLSD has many theoretical influences, but the theories that provide the best foundation for developing an understanding of the FLSD would be connected to systems theory and field theory. System theory supports the concept of the interconnectedness of family members. Field theory helps to support the idea that environment influences the family life space and functioning of the family members. These theories are reviewed and discussed in connection with the process of the holistic concepts of the FLSD assessment.

Many theories affect the development of the FLSD and also provide suggestive ideas for interpreting the finished FLSD product. Some of the additional theories discussed in this chapter include communication theory, expressive therapy techniques, and symbolic interactionism concepts. Other theories such as role theory and crisis theory provide some points for understanding the position and placements of family symbols.
