ABSTRACT

Choy Yee Keong writes about “Sustainable development and environmental stewardship,” in the Heart of Borneo a 23-million-hectare tri-national and transboundary protected area in central Borneo, for conservation and sustainable management purposes: This area protects one of the most biologically diverse habitats on Earth. However, this area is increasingly subjected to the threat of ecological destruction due to various unsustainable resource use practices that have prevailed in the region. Choy empirically assesses the drivers behind this environmental paradox and suggests ways to solve the present development-environmental dilemma, drawing from findings on the indigenous worldviews research conducted in Borneo Malaysia between 2007 and 2011.
