ABSTRACT

Lean is often linked with a related discipline, Six Sigma. As the practice of Lean has developed, credentialing programs are increasingly available in Lean, and in Lean-Six Sigma. It is useful to understand the distinction and application of the highly structured statistical approach of Six Sigma and the low-tech Lean techniques we use in our public-sector work. Lean is often linked with a related discipline, Six Sigma. As the practice of Lean has developed, credentialing programs are increasingly available in Lean, and in Lean-Six Sigma. Originally developed by Motorola and Allied Signal and refined by General Electric, the structured methodology is particularly useful in reducing defects and variation in manufacturing and it can be applied to other fields. Lean and Six Sigma coexist. Our Lean work is to build a culture of continuous improvement, seeking to maximize value to our customers. It is more fundamental and comprehensive than a series of formal, structured events.
