ABSTRACT

Empowerment transforms the staff, and thus transforms the leader. Using the phoenix leader metaphor, the renewal and growth is the cornerstone to effective leadership. Since the leader is the one responsible for the culture in the organization, the entire staff must understand what the expectations are in order to fulfill them. This should include operational issues; that is, if the staff is going to do self-scheduling, they need to understand the expectations surrounding budgets and staffing methodologies. The staff should also understand their responsibility and the expectations in relation to satisfaction and quality scores and their ability to enact strategies to improve them at the point of service. Leaders that feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities of their positions may find it difficult to make the commitment to consistent rounding and a high degree of visibility with the staff. The evidence from the Studor Group positively correlates both consumer and staff satisfaction with rounding and leadership visibility.
