ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the fundamental concepts of change, along with strategies to improve the important skill. One of the most recognized and utilized theories of change is that of Kurt Lewin–a social scientist who believed that human behavior is a delicate balance of various forces that oftentimes are in conflict with each other. This conflict is what has a tendency to create resistance and stagnation. John Kotter’s model is comprehensive in the actual creation and institution of change; however, one of the most important components of change is to make sure that it has been built into the fabric of the organization, so if utilizing this model, there needs to be the evaluation of success and revision if necessary. One of the greatest pitfalls of successful change is the culture, which can build a strong resistance to anything new and destroy the opportunity to move forward.
