ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the complications of conceiving a child when an eating disorder is present or if the woman is fully recovered from an eating disorder. Many women are waiting until later in life to begin their families, perhaps delayed due to having an eating disorder and needing treatment. This can affect fertility health and lead to the use of fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization, which can cost thousands of dollars and years of waiting and loss, without the promise of a child. Case studies are offered to highlight the unique challenges that women with an eating disorder history go through to try to have a child. Also shared are stories of healing and hope as women are able to conceive and welcome the joy of being a parent.
