ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two quite distinct topics but which are related by one concept, that of property. One type of property is intellectual property (IP). The second type of property is personal property but what is meant by that in the digital age is open to question. Certain programs and games allow for users to interact with each other and procure objects such as swords, currency and other forms of objects. The chapter focuses on the issue of piracy, which is one of the key themes of intellectual property IP theft, but it should be recognised that false merchandise is an important aspect of cybercrime. Feminist anti-censorship taskforce and other bodies see education as one of the key planks in piracy protection and this includes identifying the consequences of piracy. The proliferation of IP piracy is perhaps symptomatic of a wider issue, that being the way in which online piracy is perceived.
