ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of ‘organic fun’ within the context of good work and organizational culture, both of which contribute to the development of relationships between the worker and the organization and to the promotion of good physical and mental health. It reviews how playful strategies can be used to facilitate the transition into retirement and beyond, creating continuity between the behaviors and dispositions of a working life and new experiences in later life. Public Health England states that ‘employment is a primary determinant of health, impacting both directly and indirectly on the individual, their families and communities’. The role of play and playfulness in the workplace is increasingly seen as a means of encouraging creativity and innovation, as well as of enhancing motivation, commitment and job satisfaction. The inclusion of play as a fundamental part of life as a retired person has advantages for emotional, mental and physical health.
