ABSTRACT

Humankind is very close to the precipice. We live as if we have Planets B, C and D within commuting distance. We’ve exceeded important planetary boundaries and have damaged the very life systems of our planet. How does one find hope when faced with a planetary emergency on this scale? Realising that transforming our food and farming systems is essential to the solution. The evidence is clear: reducing meat and dairy consumption in high consuming populations, whilst managing production and consumption globally, has the potential to save us from dangerous climate change and to meet many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The good news is that our attitudes to diets are evolving astonishingly quickly. This chapter highlights some of the practical initiatives led by food businesses, NGOs, even some governments that encourage people to eat less meat and more plants. By sharing, replicating and scaling such initiatives we’ll secure a better future.
