ABSTRACT

If future generations look at our own fossil record, they will find a lot of chicken bones. In fact cheap chicken is one of the 7 cheap things which are unsustainable. Cheap chicken is symptomatic of the idea of cheap nature; that the world is out there for humans to do with as we will. Chickens suffer as a result. Cheap labour is another. Poultry workers are paid very little; two cents for every dollar spent on a fast-food chicken goes to workers in the US. Cheap food is necessary in order to have workers who are paid very little. There is no way for industrial food to be sustainable. The only way we make money is by making you pay for it or by exploiting the planet or by exploiting indigenous people. We shouldn’t call our era of mass extinction the Anthropocene. Not all human civilizations have destroyed the planet. It’s only some humans, some civilizations. So let’s call it not the Anthropocene, but the Capitalocene.
