ABSTRACT

Developmental disorders are part and parcel of the child’s biological or neurological makeup. In this chapter the focus is on the three developmental disorders Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourette Syndrome and Developmental Coordination Disorder. ADHD takes various forms, ranging from hyperactive, impulsive behaviour, through to inattentive ‘daydreaming’. Tourette Syndrome is marked by involuntary vocal noises and/or unusual physical symptoms or ‘tics’. Developmental Coordination Disorder is just as it sounds. This chapter provides checklists to help identify these three special needs and profile students’ individual differences. Supporting notes include information about each of these developmental disorders, suggested strategies for supporting the student in the classroom, recommended further reading and information about useful organizations and their web sites.
