ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the mentor’s role using classroom observation. Classroom observation is a simple and vital part of the developmental process and mentors, are required to record observations of lessons for the combined purposes of teacher judgments and progress. The chapter is helpful for anyone new to the use of classroom observation as a tool for teacher development and those that would like a refresher or advice on how to move practice forward. Beginning design and technology teachers can take responsibility for recording lessons and then choosing which experiences to submit for formative and summative assessments. The video that is collected can be labelled at points in the lesson to pinpoint areas for discussion during the feedback. The chapter looks at the part of observation in developing beginning design and technology teachers, how we might use different tools to support the processes and alternative ways to use observation within ongoing professional learning.
