ABSTRACT

I am a person (Terry) who is actually brave enough to admit I am a bad driver! When I was younger, I used to think to myself, “No, I really am a good driver and I have just had some unlucky breaks while out on the road.” But as the evidence mounted, I had to take a hard look at the facts: 13 wrecks and “fender benders” for which I was solely responsible; 14 moving violations while driving; being dropped by my insurance company twice; countless “near misses” where I ran a red light, stop sign, or barely missed another crash because of my inattention to the road. I was a bad driver and finally faced the fact about 25 years ago. I came to a couple of thoughtful conclusions about why I had all these “unlucky” breaks: I traveled too fast and followed other cars way too close. Now I will not say I am a good driver because I am still a bit inattentive behind the wheel (besides, I do not wish to tempt any fate), but I can say that after slowing down my speed significantly and creating more distance between me and other cars, I have not had a wreck since making the adjustments 25 years ago. I clearly recognized the problem and finally took the responsibility necessary. But most importantly, I made the adjustments habitual and solutions regulated the causes of my driving problems.
