ABSTRACT
In the seventh Key Theme chapter, Hermes’ reception outside of Greece in the neighbouring countries to the east, west and south is considered. Often described by the term ‘syncretism’, the chapter looks at some of the gods with whom Hermes was equated either by the Greeks or by the indigenous peoples with whom the Greeks made contact. It includes, going west, the Etruscan Turms, Roman Mercury, the gods of the Celts and the Gauls with whom Roman Mercury was identified; going east, Babylonian Nebo; and to the south, Egyptian Thoth and Anubis.
