ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the very reason, the “why”, that a transformation of the current medical education curriculum may be needed and that engineering-medicine may be an innovative transforming method for medical education. The chapter first delineates the current state of US healthcare and medical education. After pointing to the deficiency of the current situations and by echoing for the call of transformation, this chapter then describes similar educational goals and overall education characteristics between engineering and medicine, so as to provide a logical support for the proposed engineering-medicine education. Some possible benefits of engineering-medicine education are also mentioned. To conclude, this chapter discusses some of small steps engineering-medicine has been progressing.
